Decoding the Disciplines

As experts in their field, teachers often do not realize that certain thought processes, which they take for granted and perform automatically, are not comprehensible to students. However, if teachers understand what students do not understand, they can make their knowledge tangible.

To achieve this, it is important to uncover automatic responses and assumptions and to reflect on one's own professional actions and cognitive processes.

The seven steps of the didactic consulting method “Decoding the Disciplines” make it possible to uncover implicit expert knowledge of teachers and make it explicitly accessible to students.

Collegial Observation

Would you like to develop your skills as a teacher? Are you interested in improving your reflection and analysis skills? Are you looking for new ideas for your teaching?

In collegial observation, two to three teachers at the same hierarchical level (e.g., professors, assistants) get together and attend each other's classes. Afterwards, feedback stimulates a phase of reflection that allows for a new perspective on one's own teaching.

Teaching Analysis Poll

If you want to find out how your course is going during the current semester, you can get feedback using the TAP (Teaching Analysis Poll) interim feedback tool.

Using the TAP questionnaire, students discuss what helps them learn, what is difficult, and what can be improved.
