Applied research focus areas are cross-departmental associations of university students in receipt of external funding. They are designed to be interdisciplinary and pioneering. Three university-wide focus areas and several institutes were established in 2005 by the university’s Senate Committee after an internal call for tenders with a subsequent external audit. In 2016, an additional research focus area was added.
