Whether it is a long-awaited or unexpected event, pregnancy always signifies a new life situation. There are several aspects to consider regarding work and/or studies during this time.
As a pregnant or nursing mother, you are entitled to special protection governed by the Maternity Protection Act (MuSchG).
The purpose of the Maternity Protection Act is twofold: to protect the health of pregnant and nursing mothers and their children, and to enable the self-determined continuation of employment or studies, as far as it is responsible.
According to §15 Section 1 of the MuSchG (Mutterschutzgesetz), pregnant students or employees, as well as nursing mothers at the university, should inform the institution of their pregnancy and the expected due date or birth. However, there is no obligation to report it. The University of Kaiserslautern explicitly states that the rights under the MuSchG can only be implemented if the university is informed of the pregnancy or birth.
Please notify the university as soon as possible about your pregnancy and the expected due date using the appropriate forms (linked in the right-hand column). The purpose of this notification is to establish the maternity protection periods. Additionally, it ensures the review and implementation of measures to protect the employee or student and/or the unborn child. This is intended to prevent health risks that could arise from certain activities or the environment of the workplace or study area.
If you would like an informal and confidential consultation as a pregnant or nursing mother before making an official notification, please feel free to contact us.
