Racist insults, sexual harassment, discrimination based on sexual identity, or bullying do not stop at universities. Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences takes a firm stand against all forms of discrimination.
The members of our university come from diverse professional and cultural backgrounds, and each individual contributes to the richness of this vibrant community. It is precisely this exchange that creates an enriching environment for teaching and research activities. Therefore, we promote a culture of awareness that values respectful, unbiased interaction and open communication.
The individuality of every person must be respected and their dignity upheld.
What Can Those Affected Do?
Overt discrimination, harassment, or bullying often happen unexpectedly, leaving individuals unprepared. These situations can disrupt a person’s normal coping mechanisms, leading to feelings of shame, self-blame, or withdrawal. Many individuals attempt to avoid situations they perceive as threatening or unpleasant, which can restrict their lives.
Although there are no universal solutions and each case is unique, proactive strategies generally prove more effective:
- Don’t feel guilty. Acknowledge your own feelings and don’t downplay boundary violations as “not a big deal” out of fear of offending someone.
- Seek help. Don’t try to handle the situation alone. Reach out to a trusted contact person.
- In urgent or threatening situations, involve others. Drawing attention from the public or third parties can deter the perpetrator.
- Document the incident. Keep a record of what happened, noting key details such as time, location, and a brief description.
- Contact the university’s designated support services.
What Can Bystanders Do?
- Take responsibility and offer support. Help the affected person as much as possible.
- Encourage them to seek assistance. Reinforce the importance of getting help.
- Keep a record. Note key details such as time, place, and what happened.
- Lead by example. Your own actions can contribute to ending the discrimination.
- Reach out to one of Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences’ support services.
Under "My Concern," you’ll find options to discuss your matter with various trusted university contacts (including anonymously) or to report something anonymously as a bystander.
Additionally, the staff of the Diversity Management Office is always available to provide guidance and support.
