The course, led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Marcus Rühl, is run in cooperation with the Department of Building and Design at Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences. In addition to the topics of “Building damage, building defects and repair planning”, the subject area of “Building in existing structures” is a further focus of the course.
The course, which can be completed in a total of four semesters while working, provides you with the essential knowledge that will enable you to meet the demands placed on you as a specialist/expert in the areas of repair, conversion and construction in existing buildings.
In this course you will learn how to independently assess and evaluate the condition and damage of buildings and how to plan repairs, taking into account technical, economic and legal aspects. The expert reports to be drawn up serve this purpose in particular.

General information on the degree course “Building Damage, Construction Defects and Repair Planning”
Repair, conversion and construction in existing buildings are important tasks of the present and future. They require reliable knowledge of the condition of buildings, the technical possibilities of repair, but also knowledge of legal and economic constraints. Our range of courses is tailored to these requirements.
On this course you will learn
- Scientific and technical principles on the occurrence (and therefore also on the prevention) of structural damage and on repair.
- Examining the condition of buildings: in theory, of course, but also in practice on the building (we place particular emphasis on this) using modern measurement and examination methods.
- Analysis of damage: analysis and evaluation of investigation results as a basis for repair concepts.
- Repair methods: You will be familiarized with many repair procedures; in theory, of course, but also in practical exercises in the laboratory.
- Drafting expert reports: You will learn how to structure and formulate convincingly, taking into account technical, legal and economic aspects when preparing numerous expert reports.
The course includes several weeks of attendance in Kaiserslautern, during which you will be taught by recognized experts from science and practice. Professors from Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences and Kaiserslautern Technical University, publicly appointed experts and specialists from companies (including numerous authors of specialist books and other specialist publications) impart up-to-date knowledge. Legal training is provided by experienced lawyers.
As part of the course, we place particular emphasis on not imparting “recipes”. With our help, you should expand your knowledge and acquire the tools for independent work that will lead to successful professional activity in this highly interesting field of construction. Numerous graduates confirm time and again that we succeed in this.
