The course, led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Marc Illgen, takes place in cooperation with the Department of Building and Design at Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences and the Association of Certified Rehabilitation Consultants for Drainage Systems (VSB).
In this course, you will learn everything you need to know about renovation methods, technology and safety, sewerage and water supply. You will also gain a great deal of expertise in the fields of law and economics. Methodological skills are also taught, e.g. how to conduct yourself in presentations to clients.
The accredited further education course in Maintenance Management of Piping Systems is now starting for the 15th time at the Technical Academy Southwest - at the University of Kaiserslautern. The course takes place on a part-time basis and ends with a Master of Engineering degree (alternatively with a certificate from the University of Kaiserslautern).

General information on the degree course “Maintenance Management of Piping Systems”
In Germany, there are 450,000 km of sewers in public ownership and approx. 1,200,000 km in private ownership. Due to their age, around 20 % of public sewers need to be renovated in the medium term. That is around 100,000 km at a cost of approx. 650 €/m.
To ensure the groundwater supply, there are over 400,000 km of pipe networks under the ground. Water losses in Germany amount to more than 8 %. The connection between water losses and damage is obvious. In addition to the loss of water of the highest quality, these leaks must be assessed from an economic point of view. At present, damage is mainly repaired selectively, according to the “fire department principle” and simple economic approaches.
A survey conducted by the Association of Certified Rehabilitation Consultants for Drainage Systems (VSB) among its members revealed a positive business climate for sewer rehabilitation consultants. A high level of qualification is in demand.
The aim of the further training course is to impart technical and scientific fundamentals and to learn and deepen skills in all aspects of recording, analyzing and evaluating repairs. It imparts the necessary knowledge to set up an optimal restoration program for each specific case between the variety of possible cases of damage and the available restoration measures.
By imparting essential knowledge coupled with practical training for future activities in the field of maintenance management of piping systems, personal competence is achieved.
The course is interdisciplinary. Research and teaching impart knowledge and skills. Networked thinking is practiced. The aim is to provide participants with a better qualification. The integration of lecturers from different departments of the university and the TU Kaiserslautern as well as from practice underlines the principle of interdisciplinarity.
Recognizing, recording and presenting conditions, condition assessments and rehabilitation methods for sewers and pipelines requires a special expertise that cannot be achieved through individual seminars. This professional competence requires, on the one hand, an appropriate previous education and, on the other hand, comprehensive and holistic further training, which we offer you in this course of study.
