LGBTIQ

Diversity is valued, promoted, and recognized as a source of ideas and a driver of innovation at the University of Kaiserslautern. People of all sexual identities, as well as trans*, intersex*, and other non-binary individuals, are warmly welcomed. The University of Kaiserslautern is committed to fostering respectful and appreciative interactions and ensuring protection against discrimination for all members of the university community.

The abbreviation LGBTIQ stands for "Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgender, Intersex, & Queers." In German, the acronym LSBTIQ ("Lesben, Schwule, Bisexuelle, Trans*, Inter* und Queers") is often used.

This is by no means a homogeneous group, and a fundamental distinction must be made between sexual orientation and gender identity.

  • Gender Identity:
Gender identity refers to whether an individual's assigned gender matches their personal identity, and it is independent of a person's sexual orientation. People whose assigned gender at birth does not align with their personal identity are transgender, transsexual, or simply referred to as trans.
  • Sexual Orientation:
Sexual orientation pertains to the emotional, physical, and/or sexual attraction a person feels toward individuals of a specific gender or genders.

Explanations of terms related to this topic can be found in the LGBTIQ Lexicon as well as in the glossary of the Online Help Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity (which is designed for children and adolescents and is very comprehensive).

Name Change for Trans* and Intersex* Students

Gender diversity is a reality, and the University of Kaiserslautern considers it its responsibility to create conditions that enable studying with minimal discrimination. The goal is to make gender diversity visible and to strengthen it. Following this principle, an environment should be created that allows all individuals to move freely without fear of discrimination or feelings of shame.

Students can therefore initiate a so-called preliminary internal name change through the ICMS portal. To do so, navigate to the "Request for Master Data Change" field and enter your name there. Additionally, please upload a supporting document (e.g., the supplementary ID issued by the German Society for Transidentity and Intersexuality e.V., a medical report, or similar) in the upload field.

Prospective students can also apply directly using their preferred name.
