Within the framework of the program "Major Equipment of the Federal States", major equipment at universities and university hospitals is financed by the Federal States or universities. On behalf of the federal states, the German Research Foundation (DFG) evaluates large-scale equipment from this program that is intended for use in the areas of "research", "education and teaching" and "clinical care".

As part of the evaluation, the procurement of a metal 3D printer based on the SLM by Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences was approved. In the future, the focus at the WWHK will be on the evaluation of the 3D-printed microstructure on fatigue behavior. Installation in the new research building will take place in January 2024. Research projects on the use of the metal 3D printer have been submitted to the DFG and other funding agencies and are currently under review.
