Study our Master's degree program in Computer Science part-time
Brings computer science to life in a flexible degree program design
Life paths are not always straightforward: raising children, caring for relatives, the desire to gain further qualifications while working. Full-time study is then often not possible. In such cases, you can consider studying part-time.
Our part-time Computer Science Master's program allows you to have more time alongside your studies while maintaining the same level of qualification. No special personal requirements need to be met to take up part-time study.
What is part-time study?
Part-time studies spread the courses of the examination regulations over a longer period of time. You attend the same courses as your fellow full-time students, but spread over five semesters instead of three, so that you only have about half the weekly workload as in full-time studies.

"Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences offers a practice-oriented degree programme with a high number of project assignments in the Master's degree and the opportunity to focus on your own interests through elective modules. Thanks to the flexible structure, it is easy to combine part-time study with a part-time job." (Foto: Privat)

General information
In principle, the structure and content of the full-time and part-time courses do not differ. The same profile lines are open to you. You can start your studies in the regular summer semester or in the winter semester.
The difference between full-time and part-time studies is, in short, that you have 5 semesters instead of 3 semesters to attend courses and meet registration deadlines. The workload is between 12 and 21 ECTS instead of the usual 30 ECTS per semester.
Compared to the full-time Computer Science Master's degree, you spread the courses of the first two semesters over 4 semesters. You only have to complete 30 ECTS in the semester of your Master's thesis. However, upon request, the processing time for the Master's thesis can be extended to a longer period.
We offer all compulsory courses and most compulsory elective courses on an annual basis. This gives you greater flexibility, but you have to accept a longer study period.
Start of studies in the summer semester (the regular case)
If you start in the summer semester, you will have to complete two courses with a total of 12 ECTS in the first semester. In the second (winter) semester, you take 3 courses with 6 ECTS credits each (i.e. a total of 18 ECTS credits) and then start your practical project in the following summer semester with 9 ECTS credits and a 6 ECTS course (a total of 15 ECTS credits). In the following winter semester, you will take two 6 ECTS elective courses and the subject Social Skills, which is part of the practical project. In the fifth semester, you will finish by writing your Master's thesis. Take a look at our study plan ».
Start of studies in the winter semester
As I said, you can also start your studies in the winter semester. Roughly speaking, you study the curriculum in the order 2-1-4-3-5. The only real difference is that you take Social Skills before your project. After the first 4 semesters, you will then start your Master's thesis in the same way as if you had started a regular degree course.
You can find further details on the study plan for the part-time Master's in Computer Science in the examination regulations.
The same regulations apply as for full-time studies.
The standard requirement is a good degree from a related Bachelor's degree program with 210 ECTS, admissions with 180 ECTS degrees are possible under certain conditions.
Participation in a part-time degree program in combination with a double degree program is excluded.
Yes, this is possible by submitting an informal application 4 weeks before the start of the next semester.
Changing from full-time to part-time study is only possible once without a special reason, but several times with a special justification (e.g. caring for relatives in need of care, raising children, working) and in compliance with the deadlines.
It is not possible to use the mobility module, which replaces three cross-profile compulsory elective subjects amounting to 18 ECTS credits with a stay at a foreign university in part-time studies.
Have you gained professional experience after your Bachelor's degree? Or are you already deepening the skills you acquired with us in professional practice? But your employer can't give you the time off you need to complete a Master's degree? Then this may be exactly one of your reasons for studying part-time. You can apply these skills in the mentor-accompanied practical activity module and thus replace two of the cross-profile compulsory electives!
