At a glance

That's why you should study Applied Computer Science at Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences:

Whether it's a social network, an e-book or virtual worlds - whether it's a web store, autonomous driving or a computer game: It is impossible to imagine our daily lives without information technology. Just imagine if the Internet, mobile networks and computers in the control centers of energy providers were to fail completely for a few days. Complete chaos would be the result.

All these systems depend on powerful and functioning software. When we think of the systems used to monitor flights or control anti-lock braking systems, it becomes clear that we literally entrust our lives to software programs. Today, it is quite normal for us to use our smartphones to send messages and videos or to use our cell phones to pay and check in at the airport. But this is only possible because numerous, very different systems are networked together in the background and work together seamlessly. Mastering such challenges is more exciting than any computer game.

As the importance of software continues to grow, so does the need for highly qualified software developers. With us, you will learn to design software systems, implement them creatively and organize a project team. These are all prerequisites for bringing software projects to a successful conclusion. As a Bachelor of Science in Applied Computer Science, the doors are open to you in our networked world.

Our university is characterized by close supervision and support for students. We attach great importance to supporting you individually and allowing you to develop your potential. The proximity to industry and research institutions offers you a wide range of opportunities to make contacts and gain insights into practice.

"The Applied Computer Science program is well structured. In the first three semesters, you acquire a solid foundation in basics such as programming, computer technology and mathematics. This equips you to take more in-depth subjects in the higher semesters and to carry out exciting software projects."

„The practical application of the latest technologies is a natural part of our studies. At the same time, you will acquire a solid foundation that will enable you to acquire new knowledge even after you have completed your studies. Because development does not stand still. And that is exactly what makes the professional field of computer science so exciting."

Applied computer science is a practice-oriented degree program. It is about developing and using IT applications for everyday life, for companies or for other scientific fields. Problems - also from other fields - are solved with the help of computer science and products are improved. Furthermore, activities and processes in a wide variety of areas are automated.

The study program is divided into two sections. The basic studies comprise the first three semesters. Here, the most important fundamentals are taught, e.g. in the areas of programming, technical computer science, mathematics and databases.

In the in-depth studies from semesters four to seven, the focus is on concrete applications in different areas. In addition to common subjects, such as IT security or project management, you can choose various specialization subjects and thus set your own focus. In addition, there are practical projects in which you solve exciting problems in a team and develop functional software systems.

The sixth semester is a practical semester in which you apply your acquired skills in a company and gain further experience. In the bachelor thesis you work independently on an innovative problem.

The specialization subjects offered from the fourth semester onwards can be freely combined.

Examples for useful combinations of majors:

Specialization profile: Visual Computing & User Interfaces

  • Introduction to Computer Graphics and Image Processing (4th semester)
  • Graphical Apps - The Android View (4th semester)
  • Visual Data Analysis (4th semester)
  • Image Processing (5th semester)
  • Computer Graphics (5th semester)

Specialization Profile: Technical Systems & Networks

  • Application and programming of microcontrollers (4th semester)
  • Concurrent Programming: Concepts and Applications (4th semester)
  • Advanced communication networks (4th semester)
  • Developing Distributed Applications with Java (5th semester)
  • Design of Digital Systems (5th semester)

Specialization profile: Software engineering

  • Internet programming (4th semester)
  • Advanced Programming Techniques (4th semester)
  • Graphical Apps - The Android View (4th semester)
  • Multi-agent systems (4th semester)
  • Development of Operational Information Systems (5th semester)

In addition to computer science fundamentals, the required computer science expertise taught in the program includes skills in operating systems, networks, databases, software engineering, human-machine interaction, and IT security.

The application of this knowledge can take place in various fields. Depending on their interests, students deepen their competencies in the areas of software engineering, visual computing and user interfaces, or technical systems and networks. Since IT solutions are often used in business and a variety of legal frameworks must be observed, graduates also have the necessary knowledge of business administration and IT law.

Graduates are able to ascertain and document customer requirements, analyze complex problems, design suitable IT solutions and implement them successfully. To this end, they cooperate with other computer scientists and experts from other disciplines. They participate in the planning and management of projects. They are aware of the ethical issues of IT and take responsibility for their decisions.

The Bachelor's degree program in Applied Computer Science provides the necessary competencies to pursue a responsible position as a computer scientist after successful completion. The interdisciplinary qualification with a comprehensive basis in all areas of computer science opens up fields of work in the development and application of innovative solutions for industry and research, but also in other areas.

In addition, the degree qualifies students for admission to a master's program.

Du kannst Angewandte Informatik auch dual studieren. Informationen zum dualen Studum findest du hier.

The practical semester usually takes place in cooperation with partners from industry throughout Germany, sometimes abroad.

The bachelor thesis is also often written in a company. In many cases, such a practice-oriented Bachelor's thesis has led seamlessly to a successful career entry after graduation.
