„The versatile courses and electives make the ALS program extremely varied. In addition, the practice-oriented final theses provide optimal preparation for a seamless entry into professional life. I also like the many contacts that you can make here, which helped me to get a doctoral position right after graduation."

Stephanie Rommel studied Applied Life Sciences and is now a doctoral student

„I cover the basics of medical safety, diagnostic techniques, vital signs and biosignals in my lecture. This results in requirements for measurement technology. My students thus learn about measurement systems for medical and diagnostic issues."

Prof. Dr. phil. Alexey Tarasov, Professor Biomedical measurement

Applied Life Science offers a research and application-oriented education for students with an interest in biology, medicine or pharmacy. In addition, the course, which is unique in Germany, teaches the fundamentals and applications of the future technologies microsystems technology and nanotechnology. Excellently equipped laboratories are available for research and development as part of the training.

In the first three semesters, students acquire basic knowledge of engineering and natural sciences. Practical courses and advanced electives in the fourth and fifth semesters deepen the knowledge acquired and enable initial practical applications. To this end, advanced courses are offered in biology, medicine, pharmaceutical engineering and microsystems technology, as well as in non-technical and technical electives.

By choosing in-depth blocks in the sixth semester, students* give their education a thematic focus. The first half of the 7th semester begins with a practical phase in a company or research institute. The second half is devoted to the final thesis. It complements the practice-oriented training and concludes the program.

The innovative degree program combines the natural and engineering sciences of physics, chemistry, microsystems and nanotechnology with the life sciences of biology, medicine and pharmacy.

Graduates have the practical and theoretical prerequisites for scientific and technical professions in the field of bio- and pharmaceutical sciences. The broad and interdisciplinary program also qualifies students for master's degree programs in the natural and engineering sciences at Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences as well as at other colleges and universities.

  • Basic theoretical and practical training in science and technology.
  • Internships in high-tech laboratories of the university, companies and research institutions
  • Collaboration in ongoing projects on current research topics
  • Possibility to spend a semester abroad, for example in Belgium, Finland, Spain or the USA

Career prospects

The ALS degree program prepares you optimally for a career as a scientist. Already the bachelor's degree opens up exciting perspectives in bioanalytical laboratories as well as at pharmaceutical companies and research institutes, where you develop new drugs, are responsible for the quality control of pharmaceutical products or research the causes of diseases.

Alternatively, you can expand your expertise through a consecutive master's degree and a doctorate. Both are possible directly at our university. Many research groups offer exciting thesis and doctoral projects.

„Applied Life Sciences at Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences provides the necessary knowledge and skills for a scientific career in an excellent way. At our Center for Experimental Orthopaedics at Saarland University, numerous students have already completed their theses - most recently a doctorate in the field of musculoskeletal gene therapy with the top grade summa cum laude. We will gladly accept the promising ALS students in the future as well.“

Vice-Director Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Magali Cucchiarini Madry
