That's why you should study Media Informatics at Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences:
The Media Informatics degree program at the Zweibrücken Campus qualifies you for any career in informatics and places an emphasis on digital media. The interdisciplinary qualification with a comprehensive basis in all areas of computer science opens up fields of work both in media production and in the development and application of innovative solutions for industry and research.
Our university is characterized by close supervision and support of the students. We attach great importance to the fact that each student is individually supported and can develop his or her potential. The proximity to industry and research institutions offers you a wide range of opportunities to make contacts and gain insights into practice.
"For me, media informatics is the ideal combination of image and sound, graphics, sensory perception and communication with everything that has to do with computer science. We humans interact with our environment - be it with other living beings or with devices - via graphical, auditory and haptic interfaces. From computer graphics, virtual reality, augmented reality, simulation, game development, advertising, video production, user interface design, user experience design and social media applications to app development in iOS or Android - the areas of application and thus the professional fields are enormous."
Prof. Dr. Michael Bender – Head of the Media Informatics program
Media informatics is a branch of computer science. The program combines computer science studies with content from design, media theory, media technology, communication science and business administration. If you want to study in an interdisciplinary and application-oriented way, the media informatics program is the right choice for you.
The program comprises six semesters and offers you a wide range of content.
In the first semesters, you will acquire in-depth knowledge of computer science, design, programming and databases. You will learn the concepts of software development, web development, human-computer interaction and multimedia systems.
In the further course of your studies, you will have the opportunity to specialize in the following areas.
Mobile Kommunikation & Usability Engineering • Introduction to app development |
Media design & production • AV Media |
Data analysis |
Technical Systems & Networks • Advanced programming techniques |
Graphic Systems & Visualization |
Graduates of the Media Informatics program are competent in software development especially in media application areas, user interface design, content creation in the application area of computer graphics, virtual reality and audio-video production.
The goal of the study program is the career-oriented education of computer scientists with competencies in the application area of media and UX design. The guiding idea is the user-centered development of applications in digitized workflows.
With qualifications in all basic areas of computer science and especially the application areas of digital content creation, computer graphics and HCI, graduates of the Media Informatics program are very well prepared, especially for collaboration in interdisciplinary teams in existing companies, but also for self-employment.
Here you will become a computer scientist with a focus on digital media and multimedia:
For example, you'll learn how digital media and information systems work technically, how to use programs for media processing, and you'll become familiar with the processes in the media industry. And, of course, you'll get the know-how you need to develop, design, implement and support multimedia software, apps and applications. These can include, for example, e-learning platforms used in schools, universities and the further education sector, or applications that media companies use to publish editorial content on the Internet (so-called content management systems).
The interdisciplinary qualification with a comprehensive basis in all areas of computer science opens up fields of work both in media production and in the development and application of innovative solutions for industry and research.
In addition to technical knowledge, we also attach great importance to practical experience. Within the scope of projects and internships, you can directly apply and deepen your acquired knowledge. A close connection to the industry and current topics ensure a high quality in the training.
Career prospects
As a graduate of the Media Informatics program, there are numerous career opportunities open to you in the media and IT industry.
You can work as a software developer, web developer, database designer, user experience (UX) designer, multimedia developer or project manager. Average salaries range from 40,000 to 60,000 euros per year, depending on the field and professional experience. Our graduates usually have a high level of job security and can work for well-known companies such as SAP, IBM, Porsche or Google. A career in research and teaching is also possible by completing a master's degree in media informatics or a related field
"Media informatics is an exciting field of study, also in intralogistics. Our warehouse management software is at the heart of the systems we implement: it ensures that the goods first get into the warehouse and then, if required, the right items also get out again at the right time. "Ordered today, delivered tomorrow." is just as possible as just-in-time production only with modern software systems. These not only have to store or transport millions of parts without errors, but also have to be clear and safe to operate."
